Bobby McGee

I love the idea of doing an artschool wiki review post......

I've been transcribing interviews with art school directors about art education AND THEY ALL SAY EXACTLY THE SAME THING about traditional skills ..... its quite uncanny.

If only I wasn't scheckled to a university ehtics protocol, I'd do a mix and match puzzle with the comments and each head of school........

Guess its a post-doc project.........

But what exactly is that same thing they all say?

I can't beleive you list your occupation as "flaneur"! Are you trying to be a walking (no pun intended) cliche? Art sucks, undergraduates suck.

Yes it's me Spiv. I'm suck here in Nazi Germany with a faggot that's shaped like a swastika (that's a bundle of sticks you moron). I can't wait to see you again so I can give you a good rogering with my French stick. Just don't drop a loaf.

P.S. soon I will be uncontactable as I am travelling on a special ship to the centre of the Earth to do top secret work for the U.S. government. It would be safer for you to keep our friendship a secret.

Suomotikon,

I posted a grumpy response to your jibe about flaneurs on one of my other blogs. However much undergraduates such they're better now than they'll be in 4 years time when the whole thing is privatised. then they'll all be wearing twin sets, kitten heels and country road. hey! that sounds like Sydney uni NOW!

Why did you get so worked up?

I don't jibe.

Look, here's a few pointers - spelling, grammar, punctuation. People will take you more seriously if you can articulate what you're trying to say in a more elegant (and simple) way.

This is not the late 70s. Walter Benjamin is not a revelation to anyone. There is a Lonely Planet guide to "experimental travel" for fuck's sake. I'm not saying don't read or do that stuff but please take it somewhere new. I'm sick of cliches.

I'm trying to be constructive. I just don't want the next 10 years to be like the last. In the 90s people thought that being political meant ironically going ten pin bowling and talking about whether it was sexist to call someone a "lady".

Cultural Studies has played into the hands of all those people who wear Country Road, and all those who want to privatise the university system in Australia. It justifies their lifestyles. Watered-down relativism feeds the fire. I've seen it a hundred times: undergraduate writing essays on Buffy the Vampire Slayer to amoral Graduate capitalist who JUST DOESN'T GIVE A FUCK.

There must be something else? Please...

Wow! Gee, well let's hope so. I'm between languages and have had a bit of wine, but I think the scary relativism of 'so many cultural studies types' (I'll leave the cliche undefined for the moment) was probably more driven by some fairly hard core economic and material factors than any great flaw within the theory itself. Hell I've met some great theoretically solid types in, you know, philosphy, and ya know, art history; but in the end they were a bunch of misanthorpic insular elitist arseholes, so I left. I rekcon you can learn heaps from rendering concrete if the people are nice enough.......
